“This show deserves a much wider audience.”

In Above Ground – Not Exactly A Comedy, the actors, age
74 to 98, share their experiences of getting older through
improvisation, storytelling and dance. Adding their memories
of childhood, recalling moments of happiness and sadness, their stories evolve into vignettes framed by music.
In 2019 Nancy Gabor and Paul Binnerts started an acting workshop for seniors 65 and older, YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY, at Westbeth, Home to the Arts. Westbeth Artists Residents Council sponsored the workshop which was open for residents of Westbeth and beyond. The oldest participant is now 98, the youngest 74.
The group has created three performance pieces:
- STORIES, A COLLAGE, sponsored and performed at the opening festivities of Little Island, NYC (2021)
- AMERICA, STORIES ABOUT AMERICA, Little Island, NYC (2022)
- ABOVE GROUND – NOT EXACTLY A COMEDY, Westbeth, NYC (2024)
ABOVE GROUND has been invited for a two-week run during the Winter/Spring season of the renowned La MaMa Experimental Theater Club (March 13 – 23, 2025).
Performing in a professional venue is an acknowledgment of the work and something we’re proud of and excited about.
A professional environment like La Mama has its own demands. La Mama is providing the theatre (THE CLUB) and rehearsal space and shares the box office with us. This is standard.
However we must pay for the production costs, which include marketing/publicity, a technician and the transportation for the actors to and from the theatre. We have calculated that we need between $10,000 and $12,500. Some of this will be raised by the group, but not all.
That’s why we turn to you, our friends, family, followers and fans, by asking you for a donation towards this unique opportunity for YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY.
